What’s the problem?
Our current system of urban development has resulted in chronic, low level conflict. Developers are often fed up with Councils and communities blocking progress. Communities feel powerless and are opposed to almost all development as they can't see the value it may bring to them. Planners can often feel under-resourced, overwhelmed by the private sector, and unable to satisfy local communities. We use the above image of peaks above clouds to illustrate how people may seem to have separate needs, but if we search more deeply we find the connections underneath (credit goes to the Beyond Consultation! team who used this concept first). Despite the chronic, low-level conflict, we wholeheartedly believe that most urban development projects share common values and a passion for creating high quality places. The challenge is two-fold therefore: 1) navigating all parties towards that shared understanding and, 2) helping those responsible for delivery to create a high quality outcome all can be happy with. |
